Coffee and chocolate, two favorites team up at KC Lynns

MOORE — After an accident that shattered Ken Spence’s leg and left him in a wheel chair for almost a year, he developed a different view of life and used the accident to change his life and profession.

The former Direct TV employee recovered, got out of the chair and went to pastry school.

Although only one week of the program was about chocolate, Spence said that week was the most fun and decided to open a neighborhood chocolate and coffee shop this summer, KC Lynns, at 109 N. Eastern Ave.

“I want to be the neighborhood guy,” Spence said.

He had “worked for others for years and years and didn’t want to work for anyone else again,” Spence said.

Spence grew up in Moore, attended Moore High School and when Westmoore opened its doors in 1989, he became part of the inaugural class.

Located close to Moore High School, Spence has an agreement with the MHS art department to display student art at KC Lynns.

“The kids can show off their art to their family and it brings people in,” Spence said. “It also builds a relationship with the school.”

Spence makes all the candy, buying only the raw ingredients. A chipotle chocolate truffle will leave a nice taste in your mouth long after the candy is eaten. His wife, Jeri, helps with the shopping and marketing of the stop.

KC Lynns offers a long list of products, including chocolate, peanut brittles and other candies, and aren’t always available every day. But if you call ahead, Spence will make sure it is ready when you get there.

He also will set up a dessert table for social functions.

All his coffee is as fresh as his chocolate.

“I get it about two days out of the oven, about as fresh as you can get,” he said.

His coffees are double shots and the expressos to mochas range from $2 to about $3.50. Spence also offers fresh fruit — strawberries, bananas and blueberries — smoothies using low fat probotic yogurt.

On the side, Spence offers handmade jewelry. He sells necklaces, bracelets and earrings made by his aunt. He also has a few watches he buys to resell.

KC Lynns is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. He is closed Sundays.
