Jaguar wrestlers fight through ‘weird season’

MOORE — The Westmoore High wrestling team’s regular season comes to wrap this week. But for the players and coaches, it still feels like midseason.

“It’s been a weird season,” Westmoore coach Mark Peck said. “Between the weather, which snowed us out of three tournaments and three duals and we had the injuries. We probably have half of many matches as we normally would have.”

There is nothing the Jaguars can do about the lost tournaments and duals. There is no time left in the season to make them up.

“There is nothing you can do about it,” Peck said. “They are tired of practicing, I know that. We had about a month of solid practicing without competing. That is not much fun for them.”

However, the injury bug that hit Westmoore right after its dual Jan. 9 is on its way out the door.

“We had four starters out of the lineup since Edmond North,” Peck said. “Our last three matches we have lost. We had guys out and struggled forsure but we get some of them back.”

Peck expected to have two both Nick Filipo and Taylor Harper back for Tuesday’s homecoming match versus Putnam City. It will be their first action is more than three weeks.

“It’s going to take them a little bit to get their timing back,” Peck said. “I want to wrestle them in both duels and get ready for regionals.”

With a 2-4 dual record heading into their final week of the regular season, many of the goals the Jags had set have had to go by the way side. That included making a return trip to Dual State. “We didn’t make it to Dual State,” Peck said. “Injuries didn’t help us. But I don’t like to make excuses. We had 20 other guys in our lineup who had the opportunity to make things happen. Now we have to readjust our goals.”

The Jags conclude the dual portion of their schedule Thursday at Norman North. They will then take next week off and prepare for the regional tournament in two weeks. The state tournaments follows.

Jason Self, Filipo, Caleb Randle and Dillon Turnhue lead a cast of Jaguars that could be a force in the postseaosn.

“We are still a pretty tough team with all of our kids in the lineup,” Peck said.
