Westmoore unable to stop No. 10 Jenks at Jaguar Classic

Higher seeds advance to second round action today

OKLAHOMA CITY — Westmoore didn’t do itself any favors when it set up the bracket for the 20th Annual Jaguar Classic. In a field full of top notch squads, the host squad drew No. 10 Jenks in the first round.

Westmoore kept the game close, but in the end the Lady Trojans rolled to a 45-32 victory.

Jenks will face No.1 Sapulpa at 6:45 p.m. today in semifinal action. The Jags drop to the consolation bracket and take on Eisenhower in a must win game at 3:45 p.m.

Westmoore will be hard pressed to find a team as strong as the Lady Trojans the rest of the tourney. Jenks provided matchup problems that WMH couldn’t deal with.

JHS’ Latia Magee is a 6-foot-2 senior with enough handles to bring the ball up court and the ability to knock down treys. But when needed she went down into the paint and caused havoc with the Jags interior defense.

While Magee and the Trojans were efficient on offense, it was their defenses that won the game. Jordan Hines attached herself to Westmoore’s Lauren Crenshaw and harassed the sophomore guard up and down the court. Jenks led 13-2 when the first quarter ended.

The Lady Jags were able to get back into the game behind the hustle plays of Jacy Cheadle and Brittany Burge and the scoring of Amanda Ingram and Breyonna Phillips.

Westmoore outscored Jenks 16-10 in the second quarter to close to within four at half-time. But in the second half Jenks gain controlled of the game and never let up as they advanced to the next round

No. 6 Norman 65, No. 15 Enid 27

Norman High expected to win, but not like this. Not by this margin. It wasn’t supposed to be this easy.

“Really, I think that was a little easier than we expected,” NHS coach Matilda Mossman said. “Traditionally, Enid is one of the better teams in our conference.”

The Pacers didn’t look anything like a top 15 team Thursday, which is where they entered ranked by coachesaid.com, and Norman High looked better than No. 6.

In the first round of the Lady Jaguar Classic at Westmoore, the Tigers had no trouble with Enid, winning 65-27. And it wasn’t even that close. The Tigers led 54-19 heading into the final quarter before frequent substitutions on both sides.

The Tigers dominated the paint. The front court trio of Ashley Bruner, Jeanie Ramon and Lacy Ramon combined for 46 of the Tigers’ 65 points. Jeanie Ramon led with 18, while Bruner had 16 and Lacy Ramon added 12.

More than a few of those baskets came on fast breaks after Enid turnovers. The Pacers committed 24.

“We knew we had the size advantage, so it was a big key that our posts get a lot of touches,” Mossman said. “I just didn’t think that our posts would get that many touches in transition.”

Point guard Sasha King made sure the posts got the ball, dishing out eight assists and scoring five points.

“That’s a constant for her,” Mossman said. “She has great vision and knows that we need to get the ball inside.”

NHS improved to 7-3, while Enid dropped to 5-4.

It was Enid’s worst beating of the season, even worse than when No. 1 Sapulpa beat the Pacers 59-33 Tuesday.

“We just attacked them from the beginning,” Mossman said. “That got them back on their heals a little bit, got them frustrated and affected their confidence a little.”

The Tigers’ win marked an end to a lackluster day at the tournament as all four games were routs. Sapulpa easily beat Lawton Eisenhower and Jenks handled Westmoore by double digits.

Before NHS and Enid took the floor, Booker T Washington routed Putnam City North.

Today, the consolation bracket has Putnam North meeting Enid at 2:15 p.m., while Lawton Ike will play Westmoore on the other side at 3:45.

The semifinals will have NHS against Class 5A No. 1 Booker T. Washington at 5:15 p.m., while No. 1 Sapulpa will face No. 10 Jenks at 6:45 p.m.

For the Tigers, it’s the second year in a row they will face the Hornets at this event. Last year, Booker T. beat the Tigers in the finals. The Hornets have only lost one game and that was to Sapulpa.

“I think they have everyone back from last year,” Mossman said. “They are very good. They are a lot like us — they pressure the ball, they’re athletic and they’re good in transition.

“We want to play them, not just because they beat us last year, but because they are one of the best teams in the state.”
