MOORE — The Moore City Council will ask residents to extend a half cent sales tax to pay for residential street and road repairs and public safety.
The half cent that was voted in 2006 will leave the books March 31, 2011. If the tax is extended, it will begin April 1, 2011.
City Manager Steve Eddy told city council members Monday night, if passed, 80 percent of the money would be used for street repairs and the other 20 percent would be to purchase public safety equipment, such as police cars and fire trucks.
The tax brings in around $3.2 million a year.
The council also approved a rezoning request by Don Allen to allow a used car lot on NE 27th Street to also sell heavy truck and equipment.
The Moore police department will use a $10,000 grant they received for software that will allow the department to post photos and also have a better GPS system than they have now.
The police department also will host a 15-day training course with the International Association of Chiefs of Police on “Leadership in Police Agencies” to the supervisors of the Police Department at a cost of $32,589.
The training will be held in Norman and Eddy said Norman and The University of Oklahoma police departments may reimburse the city for some of the costs.
Resident Cathy Washington asked the council to study bike trails and put up signs. Council member Terry Cavnar, a bike rider, said he has been working with the city to at least get the bike routes up.
The job description of the assistant parks and recreation director and pay change was approved.
Assistant city manager Stan Drake said the city will make a concerted effort to get the signs up. He said a recent parks survey showed that residents have a lot of interest in bike routes.
Eddy said the July financial report “looked much better than June’s.” He also said he talked with merchants about tax-free weekend and they were pleased with their business.
Halloween will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 30 instead of Oct. 31. Eddy said he’s already had calls.
After a short executive session on the purchase of real property, no action was taken.
Other business approved was:
· Adoption of the 2009 and 2010 supplement to the Moore Code of Ordinances and the Land Development Code.
· Renumbering ordinances that were recorded out of order.
