First day at new schools and all others in Moore is Thursday

MOORE — Moore Public Schools will open its doors Thursday for the 2010-2011 school year. Two elementary schools will open for the first time joining 21 other elementary schools, five junior high schools and three high schools.

Home of the Hawks, Heritage Trails Elementary, 1801 S. Bryant Ave., will open at 9 a.m. for grades pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten hours are 9 to 11:20 a.m. and 1 to 3:25 p.m. Grades one through six will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Jason Perez was principal at Houchin Elementary for five years before moving to Heritage Trails.

“We grow about 400 in the district per year but we were prepared mentally for this (600 students),” Perez said.

Perez said he has 34 teachers that are ready for the doors to open.

Oakridge Elementary, 3201 S. Santa Fe Ave., also is opening for the first time Thursday. The SaberCubs will be led by principal David Moore.

Moore was principal at Plaza Towers for more than 10 years.

“This is such a nice new facility,” Moore said. “I wish every child in Moore could experience this.”

There are 33 teachers, a counselor and support staff to teach the 585 students.

Pre-k hours are 8:45 to 11:15 a.m. and 1 to 3:15 p.m. Half day kindergarten is 8:45 to 11:25 a.m. and 1 to 3:25 p.m. The regular school day for other grades are 8:45 a.m. to 3:25.

Starting times for other elementary schools are:

· 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Apple Creek, Fairview, Kelly, Red Oak and Winding Creek

· 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. — Briarwood, Broadmoore, Bryant, Central, Earlywine, East Lake, Fisher, Heritage Trails, Houchin, Kingsgate, Northmoor, Oakridge, Plaza towers, Santa Fe, Sky Ranch, Sooner, Southgate / Rippeto Learning Center and Wayland Bonds.

Junior high:

· 8 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. — Brink , Central, Highland East, Highland West and West.

· 8:15 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. — All three high schools.

VISTA

· 8 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. — Junior high.

· 7:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — High school.
