MOORE — The Second Annual Moore War 5K Run is set for 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Moore High. Runners from MHS and Westmoore will compete for the cross country title, along with runners from the community and surrounding area.
Last year more than 300 competitors filled the streets of Moore. However, the cross country coaches will be concentrating more on their own runners.
“I want to see how good of shape these guys are in,” Moore coach Chad Mashburn said. “We have been working hard and we need to see how well each one is doing.”
Westmoore’s Laura Clay agrees that winning this meet is not as important as getting the runners ready for later on in the season.
“Nobody cares if you win in the early part of the season, it’s the end that counts,” Clay said. “That is what they remember. We are doing it as a training run. We have a meet on Thursday before it so we are running for fun.”
Yet, the coaches still want to see their runners do well. The Jaguars Toby Bothwell and Taylor Painter won the mens and womens races last year. They would like to keep the titles in their possession.
Clay will look to Noemi Hernandez, Lauren Robinson, Shelby Miller, Allison DeSpain, Leigh Smith, Caleb McKee, Zeke Herrera, Zack Escabedo, Colin Waldrop and Alex Davis should have a strong day.
“We have a core group of runners that I want to see do well,” Mashburn said. “ Austin Ortega, Phillip Younts, Jordan Long, Giovanni Tiarado, Issac Sanders and Mason Baker are our veterans and we need them to do well at the end of the season.”
