National Night Out — It’s lights on for the city

MOORE — Moore residents are encouraged to go outside Aug. 3 and visit with neighbors. The 27th Annual National Night Out, a nationwide crime and drug prevention event has been scheduled for Aug. 3.

The 2009 National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states. In all, over 36 million people participated in National Night Out 2009.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Although this is the 27th year it has been a national event, Moore hasn’t participated recently.

Residents are encouraged to make an effort to know their neighbors and the vehicles they drive. Have a cookout, an association meeting or organize a flashlight walk. City officials, led by the Moore Police Department will caravan to registered neighborhoods and visit with residents on crime prevention.

Children will be able to see police vehicles and visit with the officers.

“You need to know your neighbor, protect your neighbor,” Economic Development Director Deidre Ebrey said. “If you see things out of sync, call it into police.”

They would rather respond to something that turned out to be nothing than to not respond to an emergency, she said.

“If nothing else, turn on the porch light that night,” Ebrey said.

There is no charge to hold an event or for the caravan to drive by.

“We want everyone to know who is living next door, their schedule and what cars are typically in the neighborhood, “ Ebrey said.
