MOORE —
Westmoore coach Robert Williams was looking forward to the postseason. After making an early exit in last year’s girls 6A state soccer championships, he saw this season’s squad having the necessary elements needed for a postseason run.
The Jaguars proved their coach right Tuesday night by blasting No. 10 Yukon 5-2 in the first round of the 6A girls soccer championships.
"We had a good night last night against Yukon," Williams said. "Brittany Lozano had a great game finishing our first two goals with assists by Chelsea Swisher and Mia Vabolis. After her second goal which put us up 2-1 in the second we opened the doors with 3 more goals."
The Millers had beat Westmoore 3-0 earlier in the season. But Williams liked how his team was playing heading into postseason compared to last year.
“I think I have a lot better feeling about this team,” Williams said. “We have more experience. A lot of these girls have been here for two years now. They understand and believe they can make it.”
Westmoore (8-6) will face No. 3 Mustang at 7 p.m. Friday at Mustang High in the quarterfinals
During the final game of the regular season, Jaguar fans got an early look at what Williams had hoped to see during the playoffs. Westmoore defeated No. 12 Edmond Memorial 2-1 at Westmoore. Swisher and Mia Vabolis scored one goal each and keeper Alexis Richards ended the night with 12 saves.
“I would like to see the same kind of performance we had Friday night against Edmond Memorial,” Williams said. “We had a total team effort from forward to goalkeeper. Great effort.”
As a team, Westmoore has outscored its opponents 49-19 on the season. Lauren Vabolis leads the Jags in scoring with 12 goals. Her sister Mia Vabolis is second with 11 and six assists. Swisher and Crystal Ybarbo also have connected on big goals this year.
“A lot of us have known each other for a while,” senior Jennifer Wallace said. “So when we are on the field we know how each other plays. We have a lot of young talent. They really help us out on the field.”
