MOORE — The front door opens; a man takes off his suit jacket and hangs it in the closet. He reaches for a colorful sweater, puts it on and zips it up.
This is how the television show began for millions of children in the world of :Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”
As he sang: “It’s a Beautiful Day in this Neighborhood,” he removed his street shoes and put on tennis shoes, all the while telling the audience that he always wanted to have a neighbor just like them.
What a fabulous welcome statement for children. The message rings out loud and clear — they are wanted. Someone wants to be their friend.
Mr. Rogers died in 2003, but his peaceful demeanor and wonderful stories live on.
What if we adapted Mr. Rogers’ message of making those around us feel good?
What if we told someone today that we think they are special and that we are happy to be their friend?
Mr. Rogers Neighborhood may have been created for a television show, but just imagine how wonderful it would be if each and every one of us took the time to make someone smile?
To make them feel like they are not alone, to let them know you are there for them?
Making a difference. That’s what it’s all about and we have the power to make that difference today. What an awesome opportunity.
