MOORE — Mailing a letter will cost an extra penny beginning Sunday. A first-class letter will now cost 45 cents at the Post Office.
Forever stamps can be used for whatever cost the stamps are at the time of mailing.
“They are good forever,” said Joan Mingee, supervisor of customer services at the Danville (Ill.) Post Office.
The United States Postal Service is weighing much bigger changes. It is looking at a plan to close 252 out of 487 mail processing facilities. Also under consideration is a proposal to change first-class mail to a two-to-three-day standard for contiguous U.S. destinations.
In addition to the price of stamps increasing, other first-class mail prices also are increasing.
They include:
· Additional ounces for letters will remain unchanged at 20 cents.
· Postcards will increase 3 cents to 32 cents.
· Letters to Canada or Mexico will cost 85 cents. This is a 5-cent increase.
· Letters to other international destinations will increase 7 cents to cost $1.05.
· Prices also will change for other mailing services, including standard mail, periodicals, package services and extra services.
There is no change to Express Mail and Priority Mail prices.
“The overall average price increase is small and is needed to help address our current financial crisis,” said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe, in a USPS press release.
