Fire station is half complete

By Peggy Laizure

Once the new fire station No. 1 is finished, the station at 115 E. Main St. will be demolished and rebuilt as the Police Emergency Center.

The station at Fritt's Farm is "about 45-50 percent complete," assistant city manager Stan Drake said. Funding for the public safety projects is provided by a temporary sales tax passed November, 2006.

Fire station 2 will remain at 725 NW St.

Crews also are working on station 3, 1805 S. Eastern Ave.

"We are close to pouring the slab," Drake said. "The underground plumbing and electrical work is done."

The red iron at Station 4, NE 12th St. and Bryant Road should begin in a couple of weeks, weather permitting, Drake said. And once that station is complete, the current station 4 will be closed.

The stabilization and resurface of NE 12th Street is complete for all practical purposes and it is open for traffic, Drake said.

The next project will be the stabilization subgrade and resurface of Bryant Avenue from SE Fourth to NE 27th Street. The project should be ready to let for bid in January, Drake said.
