Wrestling squads find ways to stay in touch
Storm doesn't stop grapplers from working out
MOORE — While several teams were hurt by winter weather that blanketed the over the past two weeks, none may have suffered more than the Moore High wrestling team.
Because of the ice storm and the threat of a snow storm, MHS postponed a significant portion of their of the season.
“Never in my whole entire time of coaching have I been through this,” said MHS coach Robert Washington. “Never has so many tourneys and duals been canceled like I have had to do this year.”
Washington also watched as practice time had to cut down to only two days last week.
Due to so many cancellations, Washington doesn’t think they will be able to make everything up, including the Mid-State Tournament.
“I don’t know if they will make it up,” Washington said.
“I lost two duels, including Choctaw, which is a conference duel. Then we were supposed to go to Mid State Nationals and it got canceled. We will not be able to do all of them. We have to make up Choctaw and Mid State. We lost much of our season this year.
“Mother nature is playing tricks on us this year.”
Texting
However, Washington wasn’t going to let a little storm keep him from making sure his Lions were not getting out of shape. Using modern technology, Washington kept constant tabs on the grapplers as they waited out bad weather and the school closings.
“They have been working out on their own,” Washington said. “Running and conditioning on their own. I have been texting them and keeping up with them. My biggest concern is shape. It’s so hard to get easy to lose.”
Hard worker
Washington knew that many of his team would be working out themselves without him having to look over their shoulders. That included Aaron Cruz, the Lions’ 152 pounder.
Just being on the team this season, Cruz has shown he has the dedication to put in the hard work needed to be successful.
“He is doing really good,” Washington said of Cruz. “Last year he got hurt and had a season-ending injury. He wrestled for me as a freshman. Then he got hurt as a sophomore and junior. Now he is winning a lot and contributing a lot to the team.”
