Linda Sue McGillen

MOORE — Linda Sue McGillen, 66, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013, in Moore. She was born on Sept. 3, 1946, in Lawrence, Kan., to Arthur and Barbara Harris.

Linda’s passing was memorialized at a service March 4 at the First United Methodist Church of Moore.

Her family moved to Anderson, Ind., and she graduated from Madison Heights High School in 1964. Linda attended both Indiana University and Ball State University, graduating with her masters in education in 1972. She taught in the Anderson and Moore school systems for 35 years, retiring in 2006.

During her career, Linda received numerous awards for excellence in education including Teacher of the Year, with the highest honor she felt being the appreciation shown to her by the thousands of students and parents she helped in her education career. A key part of Linda’s life was her friendships and involvement in P.E.O., a philanthropic educational organization whose main objective is the furthering of higher education for women.

Upon retirement, Linda and her husband, Chris, enjoyed their 45 years of marriage, time with their two children, grandchild, Jackson, traveling and visiting with friends.

Linda is survived by her husband, Chris; her two sons, Robert McGillen of Chicago, and Thomas McGillen and his wife, Melissa of Owasso; and her grandson, Jackson McGillen. Linda is also mourned by her older brother, Jim Harris and his family, Marina and Marlone; and Linda’s younger sister, Georgeanne and her husband, Kevin Archambault, and their children, Brent, Brooke and Brian.

Linda has requested in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Linda’s name to the P.E.O. owned and subsidized women’s Cottey College in Nevada, Miss. Cottey College, 1000 West Austin, Nevada, Mo., 64772 or www.cottey.edu.

Services were under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home & Chapel in Moore.
