Dear Editor:
As the president of classified personnel of Moore (CPM), the Moore Public Schools support employees organization, we are concerned about the Moore Board of Education’s decision in January to give the district superintendent an 18 percent pay increase totaling nearly $23,000.
The superintendent’s current base salary is $128,425. The increase will be effective in July. The association understands that this salary is below the average salary of other superintendents in comparable school districts, but CPM does not think now is the appropriate time for an 18 percent pay increase when many here in Moore are tightening their belts and making due with less during these tough economic times.
There are approximately 900 support employees in Moore that track attendance and keep numerous records on students, take the students to and from school, make sure the schools are clean and safe and cook meals for the children day in and day out that worked very hard for any extra increase in pay these last two years. Many of the support employee salaries are just slightly above federal minimum wage rates. Many support employees do not make $23,000 in annual salary.
CPM remains hopeful for next year’s negotiation process. In view of the current raise offered to the superintendent, we are hopeful that the board also will fund a fair and generous compensation package for their support employees’ loyalty and professionalism they provide to the children and the families of Moore Public Schools.
