MOORE — All Preston Cox wants to do is win. For much of his soccer career, he has seen success at almost every level.
Whether it was in club soccer or all-star teams, Cox has won championships.
The one realm he has not been able to conquer is in high school. For three years he has his Westmoore teammates came close as they made the postseason. But that was it.
“We lost to Putnam City North the last four years in the state tourney,” Cox said. “It was tough.”
Cox hopes that will change this year. He wants to conclude his high career with a state championship under his belt.
Unfortunately for Jaguar fans, if it happens, it will not take place in a Westmoore uniform.
“I am going to Edmond Memorial next year,” Cox said. “I am looking forward to it for soccer reasons. There will be seven members off my club team going to Memorial.”
Cox’s club is fresh off making a run through the US Youth Region III Soccer Championships. Padvova 90 made it to the quarterfinals before bowing out 1-0 to Andromeda 90.
“We have been together since U-11,” Cox said. “Been together for a long time.”
In that time span, Cox’s club team have won championships at five different age levels. Now with many of them together on one team, he believes they can dominate prep soccer.
“We will be a lot stronger,” Cox said. “There are a few kids of the Celtic 91 club that’s also on their to. I think we will be the best team on the West side of the state, if not the whole state.”
Cox was named to the 2006 NSCAA/Adidas Boys High School All-America Team and won the state high school player the year award as a junior. He plans to play soccer in college after he graduates.
“Preston’s an outstanding player,” former Westmoore coach Randall Robison said. “He has the ability to hold the ball and find passes that other players are not able to. Preston is probably to unselfish of a player. Sometimes as a coach you want him to take a shot or make a play instead of passing it.”
Before Cox can ride off into the sunset of his prep career, he wants to make sure he leaves no stoned unturned in trying to win a state title. And with Robison no longer with the Jaguars, Cox believes he has a better chance of winning at Edmond Memorial than Westmoore.
“As someone who will still be close to Westmoore soccer I would love to see him stay here,” Robison said. “But his family makes those decision and they have to what’s best for him. It’s a great deal for Edmond Memorial. He will make great contributions to their team. If I am the Edmond Memorial coach, I am very happy that I have a NCSAA all American moving into my district.”
But it will only be worth it if a state championships is the end result.
“It’s the last thing I have not accomplished,” Cox said. “Looking forward to doing that. Next year will be different. Want to win high school state and another club championship also.”
