Prep teams prepare for football season

Lions, Jaguars set too open practice Tuesday

MOORE — The first football practice of the 2007 season will take place Tuesday at Moore High. The players who will make up this year’s squad are scheduled to be on the field at 8 a.m. in what will be the first of two practices that day.

Unlike many schools around the state, MHS has not abandoned the old ways completely. They still employ the two-a-day system that used to be a staple of all football teams.

“We will practice in the morning, send them home, then bring them back in the afternoon,” Lions coach Bill Bays said. “It will not necessarily be an outdoors practice, but we do football related stuff.”

Westmoore is also scheduled to kick-off its first practice Tuesday, whicl will begin at 6:30 a.m.

Because school begins Aug. 14, the Lions will have only a couple of days with two practices. After that, it will return to a format of one practice a day.

Regardless of how many practices a day they have, the Lions coaching staff is looking forward to the upcoming season.

“I am excited about being familiar with our team and having so many back,” said Bays, who begins his third year as head coach. “Our entire staff is excited about the mind set and experience level.”

That experience brings with it a better understand of what the Lions want to accomplish on offense and defense.

“I don’t see a dramatic change,” Bays said. “I think our guys are comfortable with our scheme. We played a lot of young guys last year. Not a lot of surprises. They understand the expectations are high.”

One of the few changes that the Lions will have is the new In-School Athletics policy that allows athletic programs to start during sixth-hour instead of after school.

“It will get the players home earlier with their academic requirements,” Bays said. “They need time to eat, shower, study and get ready for the next day. Also, it allows us to have a more consistent contact during the school day. I think there will be benefits we do not recognize now and road blocks and obstacles we don’t anticipate.”

While the Lions had an up and down season in 2006, Bays wants his team to put that behind them. When they hit the field Tuesday, everything will center on what lies in front of them.

“I want them to forget about last year,” Bays said. “We are just worried about the hear and now. What happened in the past is in the past. We will work on the future. Everything we are doing is motivated by what is ahead.”
