MOORE — There are not many things that can stop Moore War. But the hardwood version of the rivalry came up against one of those obstacles last week.
Ice Storm 2007 forced the first meeting of the between Westmoore and Moore to be pushed back until Thursday at Westmoore.
Despite the postponement, both teams are looking forward to the matchup.
“Having the game pushed back shouldn’t affect the Lions,” Moore coach John Martin said. “Both teams will be up for this game, as they are for all Moore War games.”
The Jaguars came away with a two game sweep last year. But the first was went down to the wire until the Jags pulled off a 62-58 victory.
The coaches and players know that when they meet, anything can happen.
“Anytime Moore and Westmoore get together it is going to be an exciting atmosphere,” Westmoore coach Robert Foreman said. “Moore is a young ball club who has had their ups and downs so far this season. Coach Martin does an outstanding job and I am sure he will have his team ready to play.”
However, the Lions and Jags are coming from different directions into this matchup. Moore is 4-4 after splitting their last two games. They fell to Del City Friday then came back and defeated Yukon 36-31 Monday. They had started the season at 0-3 before winning the championship at the Western Heights Tournament. Since they rough start, the Lions have gone 4-1.
“Our guys played with a lot of intensity in the Western Heights Tournament,” Martin said. “And we're hoping to continue that trend in finishing out the first semester schedule.”
Westmoore on the other hand has yet to taste defeat. At 3-0 they have not played as many games as their counterparts, but their wins have been impressive.
“We are 3-0 with wins at Mustang (69-41), at Norman (58-52) and home against Norman North (66-42),” Foreman said. “We have done what we were expected to do so far this season. We are a senior laden ball club with very high expectations. We fully expect to be playing in March and we are working each and every day towards that goal.”
Moore War will be the final game of 2007 for the Lions. They would like to end the first part of the season on a strong note.
“There is no question that Jags are very good this year,” Martin said. “They have State Tournament potential, they are well-coached and they are very athletic. But every coach would love to end the first semester with a win and we are no different.”
The Jaguars are still have some work to take care of after they face Moore. They will play in the Ardmore Holiday Tournament Dec. 27-29. They will not be on the court again until Jan. 4 when they host defending state champion Midwest City.
However, all of the Jags’ attention this week will be on the Lions.
“I expect our team to come out and continue playing the way that we have played to this point,” Foreman said. “We have been very unselfish on the offensive end of the floor and we have dominated our opponents on the boards.”
