Tough choices still to be made

Area teams prepare for final scrimmage

MOORE — Westmoore coach Billy Langford used Thursday’s scrimmage against Lawton Eisenhower as an opportunity to see how his quarterbacks do under the pressure. Both Lionard Fombe and Trevor Thompson are battling for the starting spot.

“As you can tell by the shuffling around so much, we are looking for somebody to show some consistency,” Langford said. “They both show they can throw a really good ball. Then they will back that up with not so good balls. We are just trying to get more consistent at the quarterback spot and whichever one of those guys becomes more consistent is the guy that will get it.”

Westmoore faces Edmond Memorial Thursday at Wantland Stadium in Edmond to end their preseason schedule.

Lions improving

Moore took on one of the better teams on the West side of the state Friday when they faced Edmond North in their first scrimmage of the preseason. MHS coach Scott Myers liked what he saw from his young Lions.

“I thought the scrimmage we were maybe as good as we have been,” Myers said. “And that’s where we want to be. We are not where we want to be, but we are better than what we thought we would be. A lot crisper both sides of the ball. A lot more competitive both sides of the ball.”

Moore will play its final scrimmage at 6 p.m. Friday at Putnam City. It will be used as a tune-up for Moore War Sept. 3. But the MHS coaches still want to see the same fight and action the team gave against North.

“We expect to see a lot of improvement,” Myers said. “There are a lot of things that still need to be done. But obviously we were pleased with our effort and the way we competed against a good Edmond North team. That’s a team that is picked third in their district preseason. They can play. You can’t win a scrimmage, but we were entirely as a coaching staff pleased where our team is at right now.”

Backups see action

Southmoore used Friday’s scrimmage against Yukon to give many of their backup players action. Quarterback Kendal Thompson played one series, which led to a touchdown. After that Trey Edwards took most of the snaps under center.

The same went for tailback Andrew Long. Despite being completely healed from a hamstring strain, Long saw little action during the scrimmage.

The SaberCats hit the road for a final tune-up at Tulsa Union Friday.
