The Moore girls basketball team completed a regular season sweep of Westmoore Friday with a 46-41 victory. It was the Lions' second win over their cross-town rivals this season.
Senior Tara Martini led the Lions with a game-high 21 points. She drilled four three-pointers in the game, including three in the second half.
Sophomore Kabria Harkey paced the Jags with 15 points.
MHS (5-12) will end the regular season with games against No. 4 Norman, No. 10 Edmond Memorial Friday, Southmoore Tuesday and No. 1 Midwest City Feb. 19.
The Jags (3-13) also have a tough schedule to end the season. They are at No. 5 Norman North Friday, host Edmond for homecoming Tuesday and travel to Norman Feb. 19.
Norman wanted to make a good showing Friday in the last game that counts for seeding in the playoffs. The girls expectations were not disappointed as they rolled all over Southmoore 63-36.
The SaberCats were unable to hold their own on the boards as three Norman High girls had seven rebounds a piece. NHS had 23 offensive rebounds.
"If we can learn to rebound, it will help out," Harmon said. "We're struggling getting rebounds against Norman. Other than that, we are competing pretty well."
Southmoore (4-13) faces the state's No. 1 team Friday when they host Midwest City (15-2). That will be the first of three games in five days. Monday they will take on Moore before traveling to Edmond Memorial Tuesday for a make-up contest. The Cats will also make up their game with Westmoore Feb. 23.
Postseason
State playoff seedings will be announced Thursday for Classes 6A and 5A. The Southmoore boys are the only squad that has a chance to host a regional.
Heading into the seedings, Southmoore is set up to get the fourth seed and the final home regional
However, because the Cats fell to MWC in their only meeting so far this season, it's possible voters could award the region to the Bombers. Midwest City hosted the regional last season and the Cats were still able to emerge the winner.
Most likely the SMHS boys will travel to Midwest City for regionals, which is what they had to do last year on their way to the state tournament.
Tigers down Lions
The Norman High boys got back on the winning track Tuesday with a 57-44 victory at Moore.
The Tigers (4-14) were led by Matt Cruz’ double-double. Cruz scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Will Saxon added 10 points, Connor Madole nine and Jarred Boersma eight. Colton Coale had six points and six assists for NHS.
The Tigers led 25-16 at halftime and held off the Lions (3-14) the rest of the way.
Moore was led by Abram Cobb’s 11 points and Bryson Lowery’s 10.
Lady Cats fall to North
Norman North 47, Southmoore 33.
It couldn’t have started any better for the Timberwolves. On the road, they shutout Southmoore 11-0 in the first quarter. The Cats didn’t score their first points until two minutes into the second quarter.
Despite that, Southmoore trailed by only eight late in the first half. However, the T-Wolves went on a run to push their lead to 22-9 at halftime.
North took advantage of turnovers and a resounding rebounding advantage to run away from Southmoore in the second half.
The T-Wolves Mariah Turner did a good job of shutting down the Cats leading scorer Sidney Cook. Turner was able to force the 6-foot-1 sophomore out onto the perimeter, where her game is not as strong. Cook was held to 9 points while Turner dropped in 17.
