Eagles come up short

Late touchdown snatches victory from SCA

MOORE — For 47 minutes, it looked like Southwest Christian would open their season with a win. But a late Windsor Hills touchdown snatched victory from the Eagles hands. They fell 32-26 at Life Christian.

“We played very hard,” SCA coach Chuck Peot said. “The game was down to the wire and Windsor Hills pulled it out with less than 20 seconds left in the game. SCA did not give up and left it all on the field.”

The Eagles entered the fourth quarter tied with the Bulldogs 20-20. Each squad added one other touchdown. But, SCA was unable to stop Windsor Hills in the final minute to preserve the win in the Oklahoma Christian Schools conference.

Even though the Eagles were in contention late into the fourth quarter, Peot would have liked to have seen a faster start from his squad.

“We came out just a little flat, but that is my job as a coach to make sure they were prepared,” Peot said. “I won’t make that mistake again.”

Southwest got strong games from several players and the coaching staff liked the leadership Shelby Stephens, Jon Vanover, Jordan Vanover and Garth Branch showed in the loss.

“We also had some kids really step up as their first game with us,” Peot said. “Raymond Roberts is a freshman and played above his years with the defensive line. Also Mitchell Moore did well on kick returns and covering the secondary for us.”

The Eagles are back in action Friday when they take on Cherokee. Even though they have already have a loss on their record, Peot hopes to see many of the same elements in their second outing.

“I was very happy to see that even though we were down at the half by a touchdown, the team came out ready to play hard,” Peot said. “We made good halftime adjustments, the ball just did not bounce our way in some situations.”
