Area teams prepapre for annual Cross Country Classic

MOORE — The cross country season is starting to heat up. Saturday the Moore Lions ran in the annual Brookhaven run in Norman, while Westmoore and Southmoore traveled to Edmond Santa Fe.

Friday, all three area teams will be in Norman for the 5th Annual OK Runner Cross Country Classic which is hosted by Norman High. The meet will feature the top runners in the entire state in Class 6A in both boys and girls divisions.

On the girls side, Westmoore, Edmond North and Edmond Memorial, three of the top ranked teams in 6A will be competing.  Last week, Westmoore edged out both Edmond schools at Edmond Santa Fe, with North and Memorial finishing second and third.

Westmoore’s Neomi Hernandez, Norman High’s Megan Johnson, Mustang’s Emily Helms, Edmond Memorial’s Tara Lewis and Norman North’s Elise Base should all contend for the title.

Hernandez ran a 12:24 at Edmond Santa to take second overall.

On the boy’s side, the team title could come down to a battle between Norman and Bishop McGuinness. The Tigers are one of the premier teams in 6A, while the Irish are one of the top teams in 5A.

However, Caleb McKee and Westmoore, who finished second at Edmond Santa Fe, also has a chance for the meet championship.

Some of the top runners in the state are in the boys field as 75 teams are expected to be on hand. The first race is set to start at 10:30 a.m.
