SaberCats enter new season with experience

MOORE — The Southmoore boys basketball team opened its season Tuesday when it traveled to Yukon. It will kick off its home schedule Friday when the SaberCats host Norman.

Coach Wes Brown knows how critical a strong start to the season can be for some teams.

“Some early wins would be big,” Brown said. “It’s always important to get a good start especially when you depend on some younger guys.”

Brown likes what his roster looks like coming into the season.

“We have a lot of returning players with a lot of experience,” Brown said. “So we’re hoping that experience will pay off for us this year. We have a lot of depth so we’ll be shuffling players in and out.  This will allow us to play all out all of the time.  We want to play aggressively on defense and a faster paced offense Again with our depth we feel we can play this way.”

Southmoore has nine players returning from last year’s team that have started at least one game and played considerable minutes.

That includes a group of seniors who Brown is counting on to lead the Cats this year.

“We have 3 Seniors who will be our leaders, Jon Arvin, Connor Goforth, and Logan Smith,” Brown said. “We’re expecting big things out of these guys. They’ve played numerous games and have been through the battles so we’re hoping they can share their experience with the younger players.”

Southmoore ended last season with a 7-15 record. But the coaching staff sees a chance for a turnaround this year.

“We hope we can make it to the state tournament,” Brown said. “I know that’s every team’s dream. We’ll have to come together as a team, not be selfish, and play hard every night. Our team is confident that we are going to have a good year.”
