Westmoore's Cody Feuerborn had produced big games before. During a forgettable 2009 campaign, the 5-foot-8, 175-pound tailback was one of the few bright spots during a 3-7 season.
However, Friday was different. With a new coach, an uncertain quarterback situation and a crop of inexperienced receivers, Feuerborn knew a lot would be riding on him if the Jaguars were going to escape Moore War with a 10th straight win in the series.
Feuerborn was right. The junior ran over, through and drug defenders up and down the field. Posting one of the biggest games of his short career, Feuerborn led Westmoore to a 21-14 victory over Moore at Moore Stadium.
"It was definitely one of the longest games," Feuerborn said. "I was exhausted coming into that fourth quarter. But you can’t let up in a rivalry like this. You just have to keep pushing. It’s great, 10 in a row. Tied the longest streak. It’s amazing. Just to hold this plaque, it makes my night."
Behind Tyler Newton, Justin Smith Jordan Davis, Nick Hardaway and John Jacob, Feuerborn toted rock 42 times for 271 yards and three touchdowns. Despite running the spread offense, the Jags resembled the ground game that had been a staple of past Westmoore squads.
"It was evenly played," MHS coach Scott Myers said. "Them keeping the ball away from us reminds me of old Westmoore football."
Westmoore needed everyone of those carries and yards to hold off a game Moore squad that found its offense in the fourth quarter. Trailing 21-0, the Lions scored 14 unanswered points and recovered an onside kick with 19 seconds left in the game.
Two plays later, quarterback Vova Razryvin spotted Corey Reeves streaking toward the endzone. Pressure from Tyler Newton forced him to throw the ball early and sophomore Addison Staggs came up with the game clinching interception.
"I can't believe I made a play," Staggs said. "Being a sophomore playing, I was so excited. Everything was going in my mind at once. I just didn't know what to think. I was just as happy as can be."
Moore's defense was stout at the start sacking Westmoore quarterback Lionard Fombe twice on their first series. Jamal Carter, Taylor Lewis, Juan Gonzales and Joe Haddox led a strong defensive effort for the Lions.
But on their next possession, Westmoore found Feuerborn. The Jaguars drove 80 yards to post the first points when he rammed his way through the middle of the Lions' defense for a 1-yard touchdown run with 3:41 left in the first quarter.
Moore attempted to strike back on the next series. Keyed by Kendal Phillips 59-yard pass reception, Moore drove deep into Jags territory. But they stalled at the 18 yard line.
Feuerborn scored touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter to put Westmoore up 21-0.
Moore finally got on the board with five minutes left in the game on a Joey Karp touchdown run.
But Feuerborn was not going to be denied.
"I knew I had a lot of pressure going on me," Feuerborn said. "But you can’t let that get to you. I think the team played really great. I think I could have done better. I made a lot of mistakes. I got a lot to work on, but I think I'm going to just improve from here on out."
