Lions are not into rebuilding ·Despite young talent, Moore plans to stay near front of the pack in track
Coach Mashburn doesn't want to hear the word. Despite losing several seniors from a team that made a run at a state track title last season, he doesn't want the word 'rebuild' uttered around the Moore High track facilities.
The Lions enter 2010 low in the experience category, but that doesn't mean Mashburn is going to lower the standards he has set for his program.
"We are going to obviously have our rough times but I think we are going to be OK," Mashburn said. "I don't like to use the word rebuilding. Because I want our kids to believe in themselves. I want them to believe right now that they can run well. We believe in them as coaches. Believe in what we are doing as far as training goes and having them in the best possible shape so they can run as fast as they possibly can."
MHS opened up the season with a second place finish at the Moore Relay Meet March 5. Southmoore edged them out by four points. But Mashburn still liked what he saw from his team.
"Overall I felt we had a pretty good outing," Mashburn said. "We had several kids step up and run multiple events and do well in both of them. We are young. We have a lot of inexperience. But we have a lot of upside to that. I like what we got in the stables."
One of those athletes is Nick Endsley. The senior knows he will be looked up this year for success on the track and leadership off of it.
"I am trying to get a 22 maybe a 21 split in the 200," Endsley said. "I am trying to do well in 4x100. I am also going to try and run the 400 as best I can. I am just going to step up and try to encourage my teammates to do what they have to do when they are slacking off in practice."
Along with Endsley, Mashburn will count on a trio of Lions to put up big points throughout the year.
"Returning from last season we have Dylan Brammer, who ran 1:57 at state last year in the 800," Mashburn said. "He was on the 4x800 state champion. Also runs 4x4. He will run those events again this season and we expect him to do awesome. Mikey Moore was a state qualifier in the high jump last season. Cleared 6-6 last year. He is back to score some points for us. We have a kid that moved in recently that is named Isaac Sanders. He is a sophomore. Those three guys are what we are trying to build around. We have a lot of other guys that have been in the program. They will do well for us."
When the Lions return from spring break they will compete in the Norman Relays March 27. Mashburn said by then the team will have started to get into its normal practice schedule and each team member will start to know what their roles are.
"I think we will have a real good team this year," Endsley said. "We lost some good people last year, but we definitely can rebuild and have better people than we did last year. We have a great 400 team. We are going to have a pretty stacked team."
