Over the weekend, Southmoore left for Alabama to play in the Gulf Coast Classic baseball tournament. They are competing this week with 25 other high school teams for the tourney title.
The SaberCats are the only team from Oklahoma competing in the tournament.
But before they departed they made sure to leave the state on a strong note.
The SaberCats defeated Ponca City 11-3 Saturday to run their record to 5-3 on the season. It's not a bad start fro a team that is only in their second year.
"We are much improved over our inaugural season," Shane Enfield said.
Last year the Cats won a total of seven games while dropping 27. They could equal or pass last year's win total before they get back to Oklahoma.
Regardless of how they do at the Classic, Southmoore is on pace to reach the goals they have set for this season.
"I expect us to better," Enfield said. "We have set a team goal of 20 in 10. Twenty wins in 2010."
After starting the season 4-0, Southmoore ran into a string of ranked teams. In contests against No. 19 Enid, No. 13 Yukon and No. 16 Mustang, the Cats went 0-3, all by four runs or less.
"We are a good defensive club," Enfield said. "We also are getting good starts from our three top offensive players; freshman shortstop Tre' Edwards, sophomore outfielders Stephen Stacy and Cory Linn."
The Cats will also rely on the arm of Holden Collins. The senior ace is 2-1 on the season.
When Southmoore's returns from the Classic, they get a couple of days off before hosting Del City March 22.
