Southmoore game postponed

Lightning, rain force season opener to Saturday

EDMOND — After waiting nine months to get back on the footbal field, the Southmoore SaberCats will have to wait two more days. Thursday's season opener with Edmond North was postponed until 11 a.m. Saturday due to inclement weather.

"We had been waiting for a while and there was another storm building in Enid I guess that's heading this way," Southmoore coach Chris Jensen said after finding out about the postponement. "They don't see that we are going to get to the field anytime soon."

The game was scheduled to start at 7 p.m., but rain and lightning started to strike an hour before kickoff. The weather never let up and the game was called at 8:30 p.m.

Right now we are a little down," senior Kendal Thompson said. "We are ready to play. But I think eventually it will pay off for the better. It will be that much more hyped up and pumped to go. It will be better conditions, so it may be a better game."

Having to delay the start of their season by two days is not ideal conditions for the Southmoore coaching staff. It puts them behind schedule on getting ready for next weeks game versus Westmoore.

But Jensen also sees Saturday's game at UCO's Wantland Stadium as an opportunity for his players.

"The way I look at, the kids have a chance that they don't always get and that's a chance to play on Saturday afternoon," Jensen said. "Not all of our kids are going to have that opportunity to go on to the next level. But there is something you will remember about playing in an afternoon game on Saturday."

Thompson, who has committed to play at the University of Oklahoma next year, is one who will play on Saturday's in the future. But he is still excited for him and his teammates to take on the Huskies.

"It will be a special moment" Thompson said. "We all wish we could play on Saturday afternoon. I think we will get that chance and it should be fun to do."
